Asalaamu alaykum, I hope everyone is well, inshAllah.
I have always had the intention of eventually moving to a Muslim country. However I have naturally been hesitant as there were so many unknowns; beginning with which country to migrate to, as well as how I will support myself financially.
The Turning Point
The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was the new LGQBT movement that began in the UK. At that point I felt I needed to take the plunge as I had some savings set aside and had secured a basic online stream of income. Ultimately Allah is our provider and sustainer.
Initial Plan and Change of Destination
Initially I had planned of making Hijrah to Pakistan however I felt deterred because of the complications surrounding getting a visa for my wife (she is none Pakistani). I was then recommended Tanger, Morocco by a brother who had lived there for two years.
First Steps: A Trial Period
I decided to book a 3 week stay in an Airbnb apartment with my wife to trial it. Initially the feeling was slightly overwhelming due to the communication barrier as I did not speak Arabic. However, with Tanger being a developed and modernised city I felt more comfortable. I quickly forgot the difficulties I faced as soon as I heard the pronounced Adhaan and joined the many Muslims attending prayers in the masjid.
Settling In: Making Morocco Home
After the 3 weeks stay at the Airbnb apartment I then visited a local estate agency and signed a one year contract for a 3 bedroom furnished apartment. Two years later and Alhamdulillah I feel settled in and now see Morocco as home.
Overcoming Challenges on the Path to Hijrah
Aside from the communication challenge I think the only second hurdle I faced was getting a residency. It is an intricate process and up until it was complete I was having to carry out a day trip to Spain every third month to renew my Visa (Morocco gives a 3 months tourist visa that is renewed each time you leave and return to Morocco).
Advice for Those Considering Hijrah
The best advice I can give to anyone considering Hijrah is to first trial the country you have researched by living in an Airbnb apartment for at least 2 months. This should give you a good feel for life in your chosen country inshallah. Last but not least – have a total reliance in Allah.
May Allah make it easy for everyone. Ameen
